The best salespeople need the best managers. Here’s a quick recap of the 5 sales management mistakes to eliminate from your practices to optimize your teams’ performance.

1. Using the Wrong Motivational Levers
Sales incentives are one of the most effective motivational tools. Incentive programs often feature classic challenges following the model: “one winner, one prize.” Or only cash rewards. In short, these models are not very innovative.
We previously mentioned in an article that money is no longer the sole motivator for salespeople. Indeed, motivation now also comes from innovative reward structures. Consider different challenge mechanisms or gamification to train your teams.
2. Inadequate Performance Indicators
Managing your teams’ sales activity is crucial to understanding what drives your results. By breaking down sales actions, you can improve behaviors that lead to success and performance. Therefore, it’s better to diversify your performance indicators and not solely rely on revenue. Prioritizing other metrics like the number of appointments, calls, or recommendations also diversifies incentives. This way, you provide your teams with more motivational tiers and allow each salesperson to find an area in which they excel.
Furthermore, these indicators will be your allies on a daily basis. Regular monitoring is even more effective because it allows you to adjust inadequate behaviors as they occur.
3. An Inconsistent Sales Strategy
Choose a strategy and stick to it. This is how you will bring meaning to the two previous points: incentives and indicators. If you change course too quickly, you won’t be able to effectively measure your results against your teams’ activity. Activity and behavior monitoring becomes less effective, and your results will suffer.
Define a clear direction, a process that is shared and implemented by your teams. Then carefully choose the tools you will use to apply it – especially digital tools!
4. Lack of Behavioral Accountability
Not giving your salespeople enough autonomy can have a twofold negative impact. First, they will perform better if they feel invested in their mission. For this, they must have a certain degree of flexibility in applying the sales strategy.
Finally, if they have no autonomy, they will not feel responsible for their results. Yet, taking responsibility for one’s activity is key to quality performance monitoring. A salesperson who knows their weaknesses and takes responsibility for them will be better able to correct them.
Consequently, it is your responsibility to provide supportive and regular coaching to foster appropriate behaviors among your teams.
5. Lack of Alignment Between Marketing and Sales Strategies
According to an Aberdeen study, companies with a strong alignment strategy between marketing and sales achieve 20% higher revenue growth. This is perhaps one of the most common shortcomings in businesses today.
So, what defines a good alignment strategy?
- Regular communication between the two departments
- Clarifying everyone’s role in lead handling
- Common and clear objectives
- Quantifiable results
In Conclusion…
Avoiding these sales management mistakes is essential to ensure your teams’ long-term performance. By rethinking your motivational levers, adjusting your performance indicators, and defining a clear strategy, you will avoid the pitfalls that impede productivity. Also, remember to foster accountability and ensure better collaboration between marketing and sales. By applying these best practices, you will create an environment conducive to the success and growth of your sales teams.
