Eric Bah - La Mise en Scène du Discours

In this edition of the Masterclasses of Managerial Excellence, we had the pleasure of welcoming Éric Bah, a recognized expert in the art of public speaking and author of “Staging the Speech”. This inspiring session explored the keys to captivating an audience and transforming each speech into a memorable moment. Éric shared practical tools, anecdotes, and essential techniques to perfect the art of public speaking!

The Opening: Captivating from the First Seconds

Éric emphasized that the first 30 seconds of a speech are crucial to capture attention. He presented the ASSIS model, a mnemonic device to structure this opening:

  • A: Attract Attention by surprising or arousing curiosity.
  • S: Establish a Connection with the audience by creating a direct link.
  • I: Generate Interest by showing the relevance of the topic to the audience.
  • S: Introduce the Subject concisely but engagingly.

Éric insisted on the importance of carefully crafting this phase, avoiding unnecessary digressions or overly long introductions.

Playing with Styles: Simple, Moderate, and Sublime

The effectiveness of a speech also relies on the choice of style. Éric described three main registers:

  • Simple style: Ideal for conveying clear and factual information.
  • Moderate style: Suitable for nuanced discussions, blending emotion and rationality.
  • Sublime style: Used to inspire and leave a lasting impression, as in great historical speeches.

The best speakers navigate between these styles to keep their audience captivated.

Gestures and Tone: Tools for Impact

Communication is not limited to words. Éric explained that gestures and tone reinforce the message. He shared practical advice:

  • Maintain constant eye contact to capture attention.
  • Use movements on stage to structure the speech and guide the audience.
  • Work on voice modulations to convey emotion and dynamism.

A Memorable Conclusion with the DEBOUT Model

To close a speech, Éric proposes the DEBOUT model, which recalls the essential elements:

  • D: Digest, to summarize the key points.
  • E: Emotion, to leave a lasting impression on the audience.
  • B: Bouger (Move), using the stage to energize the ending.
  • O: Ourlet (Hem), a powerful and memorable final phrase.

According to Éric, a good hem leaves a strong impression and avoids simply concluding with a “thank you”.

The Importance of Silences and Emotions

The art of public speaking is not just about talking, but also mastering silences. These moments allow the audience to reflect and reinforce the impact of ideas. In parallel, Éric emphasized that emotions are a powerful driver to engage the audience and push them to action.

Q&A: an Opportunity, not a Threat

Éric considers the question-and-answer session as a chance to show another side: more spontaneous, natural, and human. He encouraged participants to see this stage as an extension of the speech, where one can strengthen the connection with the audience.

In a nutshell…

This Masterclass offered a comprehensive view of the art of public speaking, with concrete tools and strategies to excel in every speech. Éric Bah reminded us that the art of captivating an audience relies on preparation, authenticity, and attention to the audience. As he so aptly puts it: “Imagine how your life would change if all your speeches were this impactful.”
