Company Car

Road safety legislation has just changed. Indeed, in response to the poor road mortality figures for 2014, the Minister of Interior, Bernard Cazeneuve, has just announced new measures, which will take effect from February 1, 2015, to reduce the number of accidents.

Take advantage of these new changes to gather your sales teams and discuss the following three points with them.

Lowering of the Legal Blood Alcohol Limit

Impact on Young Drivers

The youngest of your sales representatives, who have a company car, are directly targeted by this measure. It concerns the lowering of the legal blood alcohol limit from 0.5 g/L to 0.2 g/L for young drivers who have held a license for less than 3 years (or 2 years for supervised driving training).

From now on, only one glass of alcohol is allowed before getting back behind the wheel.

Ban on Hands-Free Kits While Driving

Expansion of the Ban

The second concerns hands-free kits. While talking on the phone with the device in hand was already prohibited, this will now also apply to using hands-free kits or any other earpiece and headphone systems.

Reason for the Measure

The justification for this measure is that one in ten personal injury accidents is linked to mobile phone use while driving, particularly sending SMS messages. “The aim is to improve drivers’ attention,” states the Ministry of Interior.

Exceptions Allowed

However, the use of Bluetooth systems that allow communication with a caller via the integrated dashboard audio system remains authorized.

HR Policy Regarding Traffic Ticket Management

Importance for Salespeople

This third point is obviously not part of the government’s new measures, but it is related. The more time your sales representatives, who have a company car, spend on the road, the higher the risk of receiving a traffic ticket.

Reminder of Internal Policy

It is always useful, for you managers, but also for your teams, to remind them of your company’s HR policy regarding traffic tickets. So that everything is clear between both parties.

What do you think of the new measures taken by the government regarding road safety? How will you communicate and raise awareness among your teams about these measures?
