Frederic Mazzella

In this edition of the Managerial Excellence Masterclasses, we had the honor of welcoming Frédéric Mazzella, an iconic figure of French Tech and founder of BlaBlaCar. Since the launch of this platform, his journey has been marked by a constant commitment to the common good. This webinar offered us a unique insight into his entrepreneurial journey, his values, and his current ambitions to transform the business world towards a more collaborative and responsible model.

BlaBlaCar: a Model of Trust and Collaboration

Frédéric shared the beginnings of BlaBlaCar, initially a free platform promoting carpooling between individuals. He discussed the initial challenges, particularly the difficulty of monetizing a low-volume service and convincing users to adopt this model. The initial strategy involved creating carpooling platforms for businesses to generate revenue – a bootstrapping approach that allowed BlaBlaCar to fund itself.

One of the major turning points for BlaBlaCar was the establishment of a trust system through online ratings and payments. By integrating these tools, the platform was able to significantly reduce cancellations and strengthen user engagement. Frédéric emphasizes that this “online trust” is at the heart of BlaBlaCar’s success, today a global player in carpooling.

Responsible Entrepreneurship: the Vision of Captain Cause

Beyond BlaBlaCar, Frédéric Mazzella has embarked on a new project: Captain Cause. This initiative aims to encourage companies to allocate funds to projects with a positive impact, allowing their employees and clients to choose the causes they wish to support. Frédéric describes Captain Cause as a bridge between businesses and non-profit projects, hoping to create an ecosystem where everyone can actively contribute to the common good.

Captain Cause thus responds to a growing demand from employees and clients, who want to see companies play an active role in addressing environmental, social, and health issues. The platform facilitates this involvement while promoting greater loyalty among clients and employees.

The Importance of Recruitment and Shared Values

For Frédéric, recruitment is a constant priority. He emphasizes the importance of attracting talent that shares the company’s values, particularly commitment and solidarity. A clear and consistent recruitment strategy helps build a strong company culture, essential for the organization’s sustainability and growth. Frédéric advises leaders to ensure that their employees are truly aligned with the company’s mission, to avoid any disconnect between the company’s objectives and individual aspirations.

Leadership in Service of Vision

In his approach to leadership, Frédéric emphasizes the importance of a clear and stable vision. Consistency in strategy allows teams to work in a common direction without fearing sudden changes in course. For him, a good leader must also know how to listen and involve their employees in decisions, in order to strengthen engagement and cohesion within the organization.

An Inspiring Mission for the New Generation

Frédéric Mazzella does not hide his pride in seeing BlaBlaCar cited as a model in business schools. This demonstrates how his company inspires new generations of entrepreneurs, by highlighting a success model based on collaboration, innovation, and the common good. For him, entrepreneurship is not limited to wealth creation, but must also contribute positively to society.

The interview concluded with reading recommendations that left an impression on Frédéric, such as L’Enfant by Jules Vallès and La Promesse de l’aube by Romain Gary. These works, rich in life lessons, highlight the importance of resilience and determination – essential qualities for any entrepreneur.
