During our Managerial Excellence Masterclass, we had the honor of welcoming Jean-Paul Mochet, until recently president of Franprix and then Monoprix, with 22 years of experience within the Casino group, where he was a member of the executive committee. Author of the book Affinités published in 2019, Jean-Paul shared his expertise on a key topic: growth and innovation leadership. Here are the major takeaways from this inspiring presentation.
An Extraordinary Journey: From Leaving School at 15 to the Presidency
Jean-Paul first shared his remarkable journey. He left school at 15 and began his adult life with very few resources, but exceptional determination. Without a high school diploma, he gradually climbed all the ranks to reach top-tier positions, fully embodying the self-made man model.
His favorite quote from Saint Augustine guided his path: “Advance on your path because it only exists by walking.”
The Transformation of Local Retail: The Mandarine Project
Jean-Paul then explained how he transformed local retail by turning sales points into true living spaces. This is the whole meaning of the Mandarine Project. Among the innovations implemented: the “inside-outside” concept with fully open storefronts, the installation of chairs and tables, free restrooms, and water available, so that every customer feels at home.
The Dog Bowl: A Detail That Changes Everything
A simple but extremely revealing example of this vision: the dog bowl placed at the entrance of the stores. This gesture, conceived especially for elderly people accompanied by their pets, generated strong emotional engagement and unexpected buzz on social media, even reaching Japan. A demonstration that a small detail can be enough to create preference and attachment.
Engaging a Large Network in the Transformation
Transforming a network combining integrated and franchised stores is a major challenge. For Jean-Paul, the first step was to face reality: customers no longer liked the brand. He organized a large convention, relying on clear figures showing a decline in brand awareness, a drop in popularity, and a decrease in foot traffic and average basket size.
To Change Rather Than Adapt
Jean-Paul distinguishes two approaches to change. Adapting means following market and behavioral evolution. Changing means reinventing the model. He chose radical transformation, convinced that adaptation would quickly be copied by competitors, whereas reinvention creates true differentiation.
Innovation at the Heart of Leadership
Innovation was placed at the center of the transformation. It must be driven by the entire managerial chain to emerge sustainably. Jean-Paul structured a dedicated team, tested innovations in stores before deployment, and ensured they created value in terms of business, brand image, and customer experience.
Resisting the Test of Time: Teleconsultation Booths
A strong example of perseverance: the teleconsultation booths installed at Monoprix. Convinced that health would become a major issue, especially in medical deserts, Jean-Paul stayed the course despite initial criticism from the medical association. Today, these booths continue to be rolled out and are meeting with real success.
Environmentalism: An Essential Commitment
Jean-Paul addressed the topic of environmentalism with great clarity. He calls for a radical awakening, going far beyond displaying carbon footprints on products. According to him, only a combination of binding laws, massive investments, and a profound change in consumption patterns will allow for a real transition.
Retail as a Living Space
The central message of this Masterclass is unambiguous: retail must once again become a living space. Jean-Paul cites Starbucks as an emblematic example, having transformed fast food into a living space thanks to Wi-Fi, sofas, and attention to the customer. A vision he has transposed to local food retail.
