During our last Masterclass, titled “Leaders in Times of Crisis”, we had the honor of welcoming General Vincent Desportes, an emblematic figure of leadership and strategy. Drawing on his military and academic experience, General Desportes shared his insights on how leaders can navigate and guide their teams through turbulent times.
Leadership in times of crisis: a contextual challenge
The General opened the session by explaining that leadership is always contextual, especially in times of crisis. He emphasized that the qualities expected of a leader vary according to circumstances, but that understanding human mechanisms remains fundamental. In times of crisis, team motivation does not rely on perfect plans, but on the collective will to overcome obstacles, a lesson illustrated by the events of the D-Day Landings in Normandy in 1944.
Discipline and initiative: striking a balance
Contrary to popular belief about military rigor, General Desportes insisted on the importance of initiative within teams. According to him, discipline must be intelligent and freely consented to, but it is not enough for success. A good leader knows how to allow room for individual initiative while guiding their team towards the common goal. This approach helps maintain a positive dynamic, where trust replaces rigid authority.
Creating a close-knit, motivated team
One of the key points of the webinar focused on the need to create a strong collective. “An effective organization relies on the synergy of wills, not on a mere addition of individuals,” affirmed General Desportes. He emphasized the importance of empathy to bring team members closer while maintaining a certain distance to preserve one’s role as a leader.
Inspiration for success
One of a leader’s greatest responsibilities, according to General Desportes, is to inspire their teams. “People need a dream to move forward,” he recalled, citing historical examples. The leader’s role is to transform this dream into a common vision, capable of motivating each team member to give their best, even in the most difficult times.
