Philippe Dewost

In this new edition of the Masterclasses of Managerial Excellence, we had the pleasure of welcoming Philippe Dewost, author of De Mémoire Vive and a key player in the digital revolution in France. Through a captivating exchange, Philippe guided us on a journey through the “history of digital technology, highlighting lessons from the past and challenges of the” future!

Digital Technology: a Recent but Transformative History

Philippe opens the discussion by explaining that digital technology, although “without history” due to its speed and modernity, has profoundly transformed our societies. By tracing the evolution of major technologies, he reminds us that the digital revolution has taken place in just one to two generations, a lightning-fast pace compared to the centuries it took for printing or writing.

From the “Emergence of the PC to the” Internet Era

Philippe looks back at the beginnings of the PC, a technology first “implemented in offices” before penetrating households. He also emphasizes the strategic importance of the generalization of “access to the Internet, particularly through initiatives such as Wanadoo, which he co-founded. He mentions the challenge for France Télécom to” adapt to a decentralized model, breaking away from the centralized systems of Minitel.

Lessons in Management and Innovation

Among the many anecdotes he shares, Philippe emphasizes the importance of strategic boldness and the ability to experiment. He recalls how Wanadoo was built “from scratch” with few resources but a lot of talent, collaborating particularly with engineers graduated from EPITA. These experiences show that the capacity for innovation relies on the combination of technical skills and strategic vision.

Digital Sovereignty, a Key Issue

Philippe addresses the topic of digital sovereignty with a hint of skepticism about how it is perceived in France. According to him, it is crucial to invest in research and development to encourage local technological innovation and avoid becoming dependent on foreign solutions. He cites the example of American regulation, which has managed to foster the emergence of tech giants while adjusting rules to preserve competition.

The Future of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing

Philippe highlights emerging trends, particularly generative AI and quantum computing. He emphasizes the importance of decentralizing processing models to leverage the computing power of peripheral devices, such as smartphones. However, he insists on a crucial point: developer training remains the missing link to fully exploit these revolutionary technologies.

Digital Culture: Learning, Questioning, Innovating

Philippe concludes by encouraging leaders and professionals to dialogue with their technical teams to better understand digital challenges. He also emphasizes the importance of developing critical thinking towards new technologies, to avoid becoming mere passive users.

In a nutshell…

This masterclass, rich in anecdotes and strategic reflections, reminds us that digital technology is much more than a technological revolution: it is a major societal and economic transformation. By combining a clear vision, adaptability, and a willingness to innovate, companies can successfully navigate this constantly evolving environment.
