Training a sales team must meet specific objectives to be effective. Indeed, a salesperson’s general knowledge forms an essential foundation of acquired knowledge, methods, and skills. However, each company must offer more specific training to its employees to familiarize them with the offering, products, and/or services intended for sale.
Sales force training has long been outsourced to independent organizations. However, many tools now make it possible to integrate this training effort within the company. What if you finally set up your own sales school?
Step 1: Assessing your Salespeople’s Needs
Most companies offer training to their employees: in 2016, only 23% of companies reported not engaging in this good practice. However, traditional training methods, which are most often entrusted to external providers, have a major drawback: too general, they rarely meet the specific needs of your sales force.
By setting up your own training organization within the company, you will be able to offer more adapted learning methods to your salespeople. To do this, you will need to start by evaluating their needs. Indeed, your employees have different existing knowledge, skills, and methods when they join your company. Rather than seeking to standardize this knowledge base, you should strive to understand the specific needs of each employee to offer them a personalized training plan.
By personalizing the training of each salesperson, you will be able to enable your employees to capitalize on their talents, innate or acquired, while addressing any potential shortcomings.
Step 2: Designing a Personalized Training Path
The information gathered during the first step should allow you to set up a personalized training path. Note: it is not about setting up a different sales school for each of your employees. Conversely, your training plan should consist of two components:
- A general foundation, to familiarize your employees with the company’s offerings, their advantages and emotional value, but also with effective sales methods;
- Thematic training courses, optional and on-demand, which will adapt to the specific needs of each employee. You will then need to guide your salespeople in choosing these on-demand training courses, helping them identify the areas of competence in which they can still progress.
During the design of this personalized training path, you will finally need to plan how you will recognize your employees’ progress. Several learning tools can then come into play: obtaining badges and/or certifications, organizing a challenge within your sales team… All means are good to reward the top performers in your team, without forgetting to support all your salespeople in their progress.
Step 3: Implementing a Training Plan and its Specific Tools
Once your training plan is designed, you will need to choose suitable tools to implement it. Several solutions are available to you:
- Engage an external provider, whom you will first need to familiarize with your training plan;
- Recruit an in-house trainer, who will provide support to your salespeople;
- Adopt a micro-learning platform, accessible to all employees within the company, as well as remotely.
Whatever training materials and tools are chosen, you must constantly ensure their effectiveness with your teams. Your sales school must evolve along with your salespeople: are you ready to take on this new challenge?
