Benoit Marichez & Roland Massenet

In this edition of the Managerial Excellence Masterclasses, we were delighted to welcome Benoît Marichez, an expert with a passion for the use of laughter in business. Former Director of Talent and Transformation at AXA he has chosen to devote himself to developing innovative solutions for mobilizing laughter within organizations, convinced that it can be a powerful lever for stimulating cohesion and strengthening team commitment.

Laughter, a science for business

Benoît Marichez defines himself as a gelotologist, a discipline he describes as the science of laughter, based on the study of laughter and its benefits in the professional world. According to him, laughter is an under-exploited resource in business, capable of transforming organizations, strengthening human relations and stimulating creativity.

From Marine to Talent Management: a journey of transformation

His career path, which has taken him from commandos in the French Navy to management roles in international companies, has forged his conviction that people are at the heart of organizational transformation. Drawing on this experience, he has sought to integrate laughter as a tool for social and cultural transformation, notably through animation solutions and “learning expeditions“.

The benefits of laughter or humor in the workplace

Benoît discussed the scientific evidence of the benefits of laughter, which range from improving team cohesion to reducing stress. Studies show that teams that laugh together are more productive, creative and successful. He also spoke of his experience working with clowns in the workplace, an approach that releases tension and re-engages employees in a positive dynamic.

A crisis management method

According to Benoît, laughter can also play a key role in times of crisis. It unites teams, bridges distances and creates the social bonds that are essential for managing change. In times of transformation, laughter becomes a means of stepping back, defusing tensions and opening up new perspectives.

Three ways to unite your teams

Benoît proposes three types of workshops to integrate laughter into teams:

  1. Laughter yoga, which involves focusing on physical exercises to release emotions.
  2. Emotional laughter, which uses role-playing or comic situations to release positive emotions.
  3. Intellectual laughter, where humor is used to tackle serious or problematic subjects in a light-hearted way.

Creating the right environment

One of the biggest challenges for managers is to create an environment where laughter is allowed. Benoît insists that laughter must be positive, affiliative and used with good taste. He stresses that it’s not forced laughter that’s useful, but the kind that comes from a genuine human connection.

The management catalyst

For Benoît, the manager must act as a catalyst for laughter. He doesn’t have to be funny himself, but he must empower his team by enabling the emergence of a culture of humor. By demonstrating consent and openness, he or she creates an atmosphere where employees can express themselves freely, strengthen their cohesion and bring out innovative ideas.

Conclusion: Laughter, a weapon of transformation

Benoît Marichez concluded by asserting that laughter is a powerful tool for strengthening human bonds in the workplace, stimulating creativity and improving performance. By allowing humor to become part of the corporate culture, managers can create an environment where teams not only laugh together, but also become stronger and more resilient.
