Alexia de Bernardy

In this edition of the Masterclasses of Managerial Excellence, we had the pleasure of welcoming Alexia de Bernardy, a committed entrepreneur and author of the book Committed Entrepreneur: I Take Action. This book, a true practical guide, compiles interviews with impact entrepreneurs and shares Alexia’s experiences, inspiring those who wish to embark on projects that make a difference.

An Inspired Vision for a Better World

Alexia opens the book by sharing a striking anecdote: during her daughter’s graduation ceremony, the director declared that each graduate had the potential to do something spectacular. This phrase deeply resonated with her, prompting her to write a manual to encourage impact entrepreneurs to overcome obstacles and achieve their ambitions. She emphasizes: “I want as many people as possible to act for a better world.”

The Challenges of Impact Entrepreneurship

Impact entrepreneurship presents specific challenges, particularly in finding a viable economic model for social or environmental initiatives. In particular, Alexia identifies three major challenges:

  1. Finding an economic model suitable for social or ecological projects.
  2. Managing the complexity of “deeptech” projects, often long-term, such as those related to climate or energy.
  3. Fighting against exhaustion and the mental load associated with the persistence necessary in this type of project.

Inspiring Examples: The Journey of Maïlys Khaler

Alexia shares the story of Maïlys Khaler, founder of Omnia, a project allowing severely disabled people to live independently in adapted residences. Inspired by her severely disabled sister, Maïlys set up a collective structure where allocations are pooled to finance an adapted living space. This model has transformed the lives of residents, proving that entrepreneurship can have a direct and profound impact on lives.

Integrating Impact into Traditional Business

One of the essential points addressed is the possibility of being an impact entrepreneur in more traditional sectors. According to Alexia, it is possible to adopt an eco-responsible approach, even without changing the field of activity, by integrating values of respect towards customers, suppliers, and the environment. Moreover, she emphasizes the notion of eco-frugality, a concept aimed at reducing the ecological footprint through more responsible choices in daily life, for example by selecting local partners or opting for sustainable packaging.

Keys to Success: Receiving and Integrating Feedback

Alexia emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people and being open to constructive criticism. She cites the example of Frédéric Mazella, founder of BlaBlaCar, whose ability to integrate feedback from others was crucial in the development of his project. Being receptive allows one to gain perspective and adjust one’s approach to strengthen impact. (Don’t hesitate to watch our Masterclass with Frédéric here!)

Advice for Future Entrepreneurs

For those who wish to take the plunge, Alexia offers some concrete steps to transform an idea into a solid project. Among her advice:

  1. Don’t hesitate to analyze market trends and inform yourself about regulations.
  2. Surround yourself with mentors and allies who provide support and practical advice.
  3. Take the time to define a clear vision by aligning your personal values with the project’s objectives.

She also recommends turning to the Réseau Entreprendre for young entrepreneurs, an association that offers valuable support to committed entrepreneurs by helping them structure their projects.

“Everyone Can Do Something Spectacular”

For Alexia, every entrepreneur, whether in a traditional or innovative sector, can find ways to contribute to a better world. Through her experiences and those she shares in Committed Entrepreneur: I Take Action, she invites everyone to overcome their fears and anchor themselves in a positive vision of impact entrepreneurship.

His message: the solitary superhero entrepreneur doesn’t exist. It’s crucial to collaborate, be methodical, and stay true to your values to transform the world, one step at a time.

Don’t miss the next Masterclass!
