Metaverse and Marketing: a Digital Revolution in Progress
This week, we welcomed Laurent Florès as part of our Masterclasses in Managerial Excellence. Author of the book Marketing Metaverse and professor at the Panthéon-Assas University, he shared his knowledge to better understand the Metaverse, Web3, and their potential impact on the economy.
The Metaverse: an Immersive Virtual World
In the digital world, two major innovation trends are disrupting traditional digital codes: the Metaverse and Web 3.0. The emergence of these two concepts, resulting from significant technological advances and changes in consumer behavior, promises to profoundly transform our relationship with technology.
The Metaverse is an evolution of the traditional web, offering total user immersion in a three-dimensional virtual world, made possible by technological advancements. The term “Metaverse” was popularized by Facebook, renamed Meta in 2021, which announced its ambition to create an immersive ecosystem powered by virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
Examples of these technologies are already in place, allowing remote meetings as if you were side by side, but in a virtual dimension. The first interview in the Metaverse between Mark Zuckerberg and Lex Fridman is the perfect example of this new mode of virtual communication.
Today, the Metaverse is a reality for millions of people around the world. Platforms like Roblox, with over 250 million monthly users, demonstrate that the Metaverse is much more than just a theoretical concept. Users spend their time in these virtual worlds to play, socialize, but also to consume virtual products and services. Indeed, brands are starting to invest in these immersive spaces to reach new audiences and offer new digital consumption experiences, such as Nike creating Nikeland. Consumers and businesses have much to gain, as this way of interacting in a virtual world could represent 5 trillion dollars in revenue by 2030, according to McKinsey.
The Era of Web 3.0
Laurent Florès presents Web 3.0 as another revolution on the horizon. Unlike Web 2.0, dominated by a few digital giants who control the majority of user traffic and data, Web 3.0 aims to be more decentralized, secure, and respectful of privacy.
Indeed, the digital monopoly exercised by GAFAM on the economy leads to practices often deemed anti-competitive, or even problematic for consumers, who have very little control over the use and storage of their personal data. Web 3.0 aims to correct these imbalances by giving users control over their information.
The idea is to return to the original spirit of the Internet, that is, an open space where information is freely accessible to all, in a more equitable virtual world. To achieve this, Web 3.0 relies on technologies such as blockchain, allowing for the elimination of traditional intermediaries and ensuring greater transparency, security, and better management of user data.
Opportunities for Major Brands
The Metaverse and Web 3.0 represent incredible opportunities for businesses. In the Metaverse, brands can create immersive experiences in a virtual world, offer virtual products such as skins for user avatars, or organize live events in this digital environment. Moreover, the immersive nature of the Metaverse offers companies the possibility to create stronger and more engaging connections with their customers.
Web 3.0, on the other hand, allows for more personalized, secure, and privacy-respecting services in a decentralized digital environment. Moreover, Web 3.0 could enable businesses to free themselves from their dependence on digital giants and regain control of their data, which is valuable for a multitude of uses in this new virtual world.
A Digital Revolution in Progress
The metaverse and Web 3.0 are still in their early stages, but their potential is immense for creating new opportunities in the digital economy. Technological advancements, particularly in terms of connectivity with 5G, virtual and augmented reality, as well as artificial intelligence, will accelerate their development and transform our relationship with these innovative technologies.
This is a revolution that will transform the way we interact with the digital and virtual world. For businesses, it’s a unique opportunity to reinvent themselves and offer new digital experiences to their customers in an expanding virtual world. To fully benefit from this, they will need to be able to adapt and understand these new trends in a constantly evolving world, which is not always easy.
In conclusion, Laurent Florès has taught us that marketing in the metaverse and Web 3.0 is not a flash in the pan, but rather an ongoing evolution. Companies that know how to take advantage of it will have a head start in tomorrow’s digital world, and the applications of these technologies are finding echoes in all sectors!
