In this new edition of the Masterclasses of Managerial Excellence, we welcomed Laurent Florès, a recognized expert in digital marketing and author of Metaver Marketing. During this session, he explored the potential and challenges of the metaverse, questioning whether “it”“is a profound digital transformation or just a temporary phenomenon”. The main issue, according to him, lies in the metaverse’s ability to revolutionize digital interactions and sustainably influence current commercial practices.
Origins and Concept of the Metaverse
The term “metaverse” first appeared in the 90s in Neil Stephenson’s novel Snow Crash, but it took Facebook‘s technological advancements and innovations in virtual reality to see concrete initiatives emerge. Today, the metaverse offers immersive experiences where millions of users interact daily, particularly in gaming-related environments.
The Metaverse and Web 3.0
Laurent Florès explained Web 3.0 as a decentralized model, breaking away from Web 2.0 dominated by digital giants. Web 3.0 is based on blockchain, thus promoting fair distribution of value and transparent traceability. It presents innovations such as NFTs (non-fungible tokens), which allow users to own unique virtual objects, opening up marketing opportunities for brands.
Use Cases and Commercial Opportunities
Some brands, like Nike, are already using the metaverse to interact directly with younger generations. Laurent illustrated how virtual products can be sold in environments like Roblox, allowing users to own digital and physical versions of products. This dual existence (physical and virtual) becomes a marketing asset, particularly for sectors such as fashion and automotive, which are beginning to integrate this strategy to attract tech-savvy consumers.
Challenges and Future Perspectives
Laurent also addressed the criticisms: ethical concerns related to the valorization of virtual identities and the excessive energy consumption required to support these technologies. The future of the metaverse, according to him, relies on a balance between immersive innovations and effective regulation to ensure ethical and sustainable use.
In conclusion, this session explored the challenges of the metaverse, between its promising commercial applications and the challenges of transitioning to a more immersive digital world. The metaverse seems to be more than a trend: a developing platform for future interactions.
