Laurent Combalbert

In this edition of the Masterclasses of Managerial Excellence, we had the honor of welcoming Laurent Combalbert, renowned negotiator and former member of RAID, to explore advanced negotiation techniques derived from his experience in extreme crisis management. Laurent shared methods applicable not only in critical situations but also in the daily lives of managers, salespeople, and business leaders.

The Fundamentals of Negotiation: Prepare to Succeed

Laurent emphasizes that preparation is the key to successful negotiation. The preparation phase includes: “analyzing the balance of power, clarifying roles and mandates, as well as defining a” Shared Common Objective (SCO): an engaging, positive, and emotionally motivating goal. Neglecting this step often leads to chaotic or ineffective situations.

The Importance of Conflict in Negotiation

Contrary to what one might think, Laurent explains that conflict should not be avoided but used as a lever to create value. Successful negotiation allows transforming conflict into opportunity, where parties find winning solutions through listening and mutual understanding.

Developing Lasting Trust

For Laurent, trust is the central pillar of effective negotiation. It is based on two aspects: self-confidence, which involves being convinced of one’s own legitimacy and competence, and mutual trust, which avoids manipulation and promotes open communication, thus establishing long-term relationships with one’s interlocutors.

Managing Emotions to Maintain Serenity

Emotions play a central role in any negotiation. Laurent advises identifying and verbalizing one’s own emotions to prevent them from disrupting the process, and learning to manage tensions through anchoring techniques, such as breathing and body language. He reminds that uncontrolled emotions can exacerbate conflicts.

The SCO: a Strategic Tool for Uniting

The Shared Common Objective (SCO) is a key concept developed by Laurent. It is an objective that addresses the interests of all parties, provides a positive and inspiring vision, and allows for sincere and engaging collaboration. This approach helps overcome disagreements and align parties towards a common goal.

Debriefing: an Essential Learning Tool

Laurent insists on the importance of debriefing after a negotiation. This takes place in two phases: emotional debriefing, immediately after the negotiation, to stabilize emotions, and technical debriefing, a few days later, when emotions have cooled, to analyze successes and areas for improvement. This process allows for continuous improvement of negotiation skills.

Ethics and Effectiveness: a Balance to Preserve

Laurent reminds that negotiation should never rely on manipulation or deception. An ethical approach, based on listening and sincerity, not only strengthens trust but also ensures lasting results.

Conclusion: Negotiation as a Lever for Transformation

This webinar highlighted the importance of thorough preparation, mastered emotional management, and building trust relationships in negotiation. Laurent Combalbert offered us an inspiring perspective on the art of negotiation, whether in crisis contexts or in daily management. By integrating these principles, managers and leaders can transform challenges into opportunities and create collective and sustainable solutions.
