In this edition of the Managerial Excellence Masterclasses, we had the pleasure of welcoming Philippe Lafaix, sales expert and co-author of the bestseller “Les accélérateurs de vente” (Sales Accelerators) with Michael Aguilar. A Harvard graduate and former trader, he shares the most effective persuasion techniques, derived from observing 104 elite salespeople.

Modeling Success rather than Theorizing

Philippe immediately states his philosophy: “Our job was simple: to model success.” With Michael Aguilar, they accompanied 104 top salespeople in their respective fields over four editions to identify their “effective tricks” rather than developing theoretical concepts.

“What interests us is going beyond anecdote to extract the essence,” he explains. This field-based approach allows for offering solutions that are “graspable, concrete, and ready-to-use” and truly make a difference in the field.

The conclusion is clear: “It’s not the big concepts that salespeople remember six months or a year later, but the small, concrete, and operational tricks.”

Meeting Opening: Breaking Conventions with Powerful Metaphors

Philippe reveals the crucial importance of the first few seconds with striking examples. The top salesperson at a banking subsidiary specializing in auto financing starts their meetings as follows:

“I haven’t come to talk to you about loans or guarantees. Me, I’m a pump salesman… money pumps! My job is to mobilize all my teams to ensure that every euro generates 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 euros of additional revenue for you.”

This metaphorical and unconventional approach instantly makes an impression. Philippe cites another example with an IT salesperson who introduces themselves as “a Waze”: “I scan all possible routes to offer you the ideal path that will save you time, money, and eliminate risks.”

The goal: to break conventions and stimulate curiosity from the very first moments to differentiate oneself from the competition.

The Trailer Technique in Sales Pitches

Philippe revolutionizes the traditional approach to argumentation with his trailer technique: “A sales pitch is like a burger: the top bun has to be super attractive.”

In the photovoltaic sector, instead of a linear presentation, he suggests: “What we offer is a bit like the Olympic Games flag: a white flag with five rings representing each continent united by the values of sport. Our solution is similar: five rings of security for your electrical production goals.”

This approach offers several advantages: attracting attention, keeping the client in suspense exactly like in a movie, and maintaining mystery to sustain engagement. “When you say too much, you lose the mystery, and when you lose the mystery, you lose the allure.”

Objection Handling: EDF’s Strategy against the Competition

Philippe reveals how EDF Energie, despite prices twice as high as its competitors (Engie, Total), maintains 55% market share thanks to a remarkable objection handling strategy.

First step: social proof. The salesperson fully acknowledges the price difference: “I know we’re twice as expensive as Engie. Besides, Engie is a very good company, we’re very similar.”

Second step: create a paradox. “We hold 55% of the market even though we are twice as expensive. The commonality among our clients? The vast majority of them had an Engie quote that was half the price, yet they chose us.”

Third step: leading questions. “Do you seriously believe a company like Engie would amuse itself by selling at a loss? And do you believe that EDF, with its 170,000 employees and constant oversight, could offer fanciful prices?”

This method prompts the client to conclude themselves: “Perhaps you’re not selling exactly the same thing.”

Breaking away from Standardized Sales Approaches

Philippe denounces a scourge of the industry: “Sales training has too often transformed salespeople into completely standard machines, a pasteurized Camembert without smell or taste.”

His message is clear: “You have to love stinky cheese, meaning cheese with character, personality, and rough edges.” This authentic differentiation becomes crucial in the face of current hyperconnectivity.

The example of his airplane model perfectly illustrates this philosophy: rather than blandly answering the question “Are you passionate about aviation?”, he stuck a sticker asking to “take a pen and add a checkmark” to the tally of times he’s been asked that question.

Beyond Techniques: the Transformative Experience

Philippe concludes with a quote from Einstein that summarizes his philosophy: “All knowledge is experience, the rest is just information.”

“If we want people to progress, it’s not about giving them information or making slides. It’s about them having a strong experience.” This managerial approach fundamentally transforms learning by creating emotional impacts necessary for change.

In a nutshell…

  • Commercial Persuasion Techniques: observe the field to identify effective methods from top salespeople rather than following abstract theories.

  • Impactful Meeting Opening: use metaphors and the trailer technique to capture attention and create differentiation from the very first moments.

  • Strategic Objection Handling: transform apparent weaknesses into strengths of conviction through social proof and leading questions.
