Hortense le Gentil

In this edition of the Masterclasses for Managerial Excellence, we delve into the power of empathetic leadership with Hortense, co-founder of H2 Consulting Group and author of “The Unlocked Leader”. Hortense’s approach encourages leaders to transcend traditional methods by combining empathy, self-awareness, and authenticity. How can leaders unlock their potential and inspire others to do the same?

The Journey of Becoming a Human-Centered Leader

Hortense emphasizes that true leadership requires more than just strategic thinking; it requires leading with the heart and soul. A critical aspect of this is understanding our “mind traps“—the limiting beliefs shaped by upbringing, environment, and past experiences. Hortense likens these to training wheels that once provided stability but eventually need to be shed for personal growth. She explains, “Just as a child learns to ride a bike without training wheels, leaders must learn to let go of old beliefs that no longer serve them.”

Recognizing and Overcoming Mind Traps

One of the first steps to empathetic leadership is identifying these mind traps. Common traps include the need for perfection or the fear of failure. Hortense advises leaders to “have a conversation with your fears” rather than suppressing them. Awareness of these traps allows leaders to understand their own limitations and better connect with their teams.

Hortense shares a poignant example of a client who struggled with assertiveness due to a traumatic experience during his student years. The client’s journey to becoming a CEO was hindered by a subconscious fear of being interrupted, rooted in a past incident with a teacher. Hortense guided him through recognizing this fear, challenging its relevance, and eventually letting go of its power. The lesson? By confronting our mind traps, we can achieve a deeper connection with our true selves and lead with authenticity.

Shifting from Mind Traps to Mind Shifts

Beyond identifying mind traps, Hortense focuses on helping leaders shift these obstacles out of their way. She introduces the concept of “mind shifts,” a process that involves rewriting internal narratives and freeing oneself from past constraints. This transformation allows leaders to break free from outdated beliefs and step into their full potential. Hortense shares exercises for letting go, emphasizing the importance of revisiting difficult moments until they no longer trigger emotional responses.

She also highlights the significance of self-reflection through a “daily rendezvous“—a practice of taking 5-10 minutes each day to assess one’s thoughts, feelings, and progress. This simple routine helps leaders stay connected to their core values and adjust their behaviors accordingly.

Visualization and Empathy: Tools for Authentic Leadership

Hortense is a strong advocate of visualization as a tool for building confidence and preparing for challenging situations. She describes an exercise where leaders imagine themselves in high-stakes scenarios, such as a job interview or a board meeting, and visualize a positive outcome. This mental rehearsal helps reduce anxiety and reinforces self-belief.

Empathy, according to Hortense, is central to effective leadership. She defines it as “the ability to feel what others are feeling” and emphasizes that leaders must first connect with themselves before they can truly connect with others. A unique approach Hortense uses is equine-assisted learning, where interactions with horses help leaders become more attuned to their non-verbal communication and emotional presence.

Leading with Heart, Mind, and Soul

Hortense’s masterclass is a reminder that leadership is as much about inner work as it is about strategic direction. She challenges leaders to reflect on questions like: Who are you beyond your title? How do you want to be remembered as a leader? What legacy do you wish to leave behind?

By embracing their vulnerabilities and fostering an environment where empathy and authenticity thrive, leaders can create a culture of trust and collaboration within their organizations. Hortense’s message is clear: leadership is not about perfection; it’s about embracing our humanity and empowering others to do the same.
