Sales professionals are not like other employees. If you want to succeed and be effective in this profession, if you want to be recruited and build a career in the best companies, you must possess – or acquire – certain qualities sought after by sales managers. So, what kind of sales professional does your current or future manager dream of?

Be Autonomous in Managing Your Performance

As a sales professional, you surely have a risk-taking mindset, a sense of effort, and you know better than anyone that nothing is ever a given. To achieve your objectives, you must be able to meet the expectations placed upon you and demonstrate daily focus. To do this, it is essential to master your products and/or services inside out and always keep track of your ongoing deals. But to achieve your goals, you must also know how to manage your time and demonstrate flawless organization, allowing you to prioritize your actions.

Your sales manager expects a certain level of self-management from you. Indeed, every manager dreams of a sales professional who is proactive, asks for advice when a problem or limitation arises, formulates their own strategies, and also proposes solutions and prioritizes their tasks. In short, you must be autonomous and capable of driving your performance.

  • Coach’s tip: there are now digital platforms that allow you to track your performance day-to-day in an intuitive and motivating way, and to train yourself. Consider discussing it with your sales manager!

Demonstrate Unwavering Perseverance

The numbers speak for themselves: 80% of sales require 5 follow-up calls after an initial meeting, and 44% of sales professionals give up after just one follow-up (94 Key Sales Statistics to Help You Sell Smarter in 2025, Hubspot). Determination is a highly valued quality by managers, without which it is impossible not only to be effective but also to sustain success long-term.

With this in mind, a good sales professional must demonstrate patience with sometimes indecisive clients, but also resist the pressure and stress of targets. Beyond determination, it is resilience that sales managers seek: the ability to bounce back, to move forward after a setback, and to interpret signals to do better next time.

For this reason, view your manager more as a coach than a hierarchical superior: they support you in focusing your attention on what is important, whether you are among the “top performers,” the “pack,” or the “laggards.”

  • Coach’s tip: Lthe best way to improve your resilience, or to prove your determination, is to set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Ambitious, Realistic, and Time-bound) that you must be able to track daily. To do this, focus your efforts on activity metrics: number of calls/day, number of appointments/week. This way, you will be able to see and track your progress over time.

Opt for Collaborative Communication

Other qualities sought in sales professionals include interpersonal skills, a sense of sharing, and good listening skills with your prospects and clients, as well as internally. Indeed, the sales profession today is about listening and advising. To understand a prospect’s needs and be able to offer a relevant solution, you must listen to them. The ideal sales professional must therefore be able to adopt open, dynamic, and constructive communication.

Internally, your manager also expects you to communicate with your management and colleagues. If you fear your manager or colleagues, or if they are wary of you, nothing positive will come of it for any party. However, if you inspire trust and demonstrate good listening skills, your team will support you, advise you, and your performance will benefit. Feedback comes through all forms of language, from voice to body language and emotions.

Communication also involves sharing best practices. A manager appreciates you sharing, for example on your company’s exchange platform, your field feedback and advice: ideas for new ways to present a product or service, your tips for accelerating the closing phase, etc. This shows that a sales professional works for the entire company’s sales strategy. And this type of profile is particularly valued within sales teams. Building connections among sales teams and developing genuine communities of exchange are part of the modern sales manager’s job description.

  • Coach’s tip: a sales professional capable of expressing themselves, especially after a failure, is a sales professional capable of improving and thus optimizing their results. Never hesitate to ask for advice!

To achieve good results in a company, managers will therefore seek sales professionals who are focused, determined, and skilled at communication.
